1. What are the benefits of the Baby Signs® Program?

In the course of two decades of research, Drs. Acredolo and Goodwyn have uncovered a variety of ways in which babies and their caregivers benefit from using the Baby Signs® Program. What they found is that the Baby Signs® Program:

  • Reduced frustration and builds trust

  • Allows babies to share their worlds

  • Strengthens the parent/infant bond

  • Reveals how smart babies really are

  • Promotes positive emotional development

  • Boosts babies’ self-confidence

  • Helps babies learn to talk

  • Jumpstarts intellectual development

2. Won’t non-verbal communication discourage or slow my baby from learning to talk?

In 1989 Drs Acredolo and Goodwyn launched a study in which they followed the development of a group of babies whose parents were asked to encourage the use of signs and control groups of babies whose parents had never heard about signing. The results? The children who had been encouraged to use signs actually learned to talk sooner, not later! Signing actually made learning words easier, not harder!

3. Does the Baby Signs® Program use American Sign Language (ASL) signs?

Most of the signs in the Baby Signs® Program are ASL signs. Some are ASL signs that have been modified to make them easier for little fingers. Still other recommended signs are gestures that closely match babies’ direct experiences. In the Baby Signs® Program, you have the flexibility to use either type of sign or a mixture of both types, depending on your goals.

4. When should I start signing with my baby?

There is no “perfect” time to start signing. Any baby or toddler who shows readiness to communicate, but cannot do so effectively with words, is a candidate for signing, and as a parent, you should not feel that it’s too early or too late to start.

5. When will my baby start signing back to me?

Every baby’s timing is different. Many factors contribute to when your child will begin signing such as exposure to signs, age, and your baby’s interest in communication. If you maintain patience and consistency, your child will definitely realize that signing is a great communication tool.

6. Is there any research behind the Baby Signs® Program?

Dr. Linda Acredolo and Dr. Susan Goodwyn, the authors of the book Baby Signs: How to Talk with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk, have conducted over two decades of academic research on the use of signs with hearing babies, including a long-term study funded by the National Institutes of Health. Their ground-breaking research describes the proven benefits of the Baby Signs® Program. Their scientific study of over 140 families took place over a seven-year period and yielded some remarkable results. They conducted standardized assessments of children who participated in Baby Signs® groups and those in non-Baby Signs® groups at several stages in their development.

At 24 months, the Baby Signs® babies were on average talking more like 27 or 28 month olds. This represents more than a three-month advantage over the non-Baby Signs® babies. In addition, the 24 month old Baby Signs® babies were putting together significantly longer sentences.

At 36 months, Baby Signs® babies on average were talking like 47 month olds, putting them almost a full year ahead of their average age-mates. Eight year olds who had been Baby Signs® babies scored an average of 12 points higher in IQ than their non-signing peers.
